Commodore’s Comments

NOODs are over for another year.  What a bunch of races that was.  Inspiration was well on its way to a first on Saturday when one of our crew decided that he wanted to go for a swim!  However, he wasn’t in the water long.  The gate boat plucked him out of the water within minutes, but we were out of the race. (one crew short and a turned on engine)  It was a very exciting event and two great days of being on the water!

Speaking of exciting events; mark your calendars for the Catalina Rendezvous, July 11-13 at Two Harbors.  Please let me know if you plan on attending and what your float plan will be.  Inspiration will be sailing to Dana Point on Wednesday, July 9th and then on to Catalina Island on Thursday morning; then returning on Monday morning from Avalon back to SD.

Our first cruising event of the season was held over the weekend.  Please check outthe Cruising section below.

See you all Wednesday

SDCatA Cruising in 2008

Glorietta Bay Rocks.  Our first cruise was to beautiful Glorietta Bay on March 29-30th.  Saturday was sunny and warm and, after some trying, the sun finally came out on Sunday.  Eight boats attended including:  Candice on Stooges Creed 3,  Chip and Debbie on Gypsy Soul,  Craig and Jean on Leave a Message, James and Christine on Escape,  David and Kim on Wine Knot,  Mike and Holly on Southern Cross, Brian and Pat on Hakuna Matata and Larry and Mary Ellen on Sabbatical.   Starting at 3 on Saturday afternoon the food started coming, and everyone overate until the wine came out and they made an effort to overdrink too.  Actually the raft was split with the liberal partiers on the left and the conservative eaters on the right.  As the drinking increased, some great rock and roll sing-along music started with everyone joining in for both the drinking and the singing.  Actually, the “lefty” liberals partied much heartier than the conservative “righties”.  However, no political correctness was shown by either the left or the right.  On Sunday morning the group migrated to outside seating at a Coronado restaurant for breakfast.  Back at the raft-up, more food and beverage was consumed as the group made mental plans to leave Sunday afternoon.  Thanks to Mike and Larry for setting two anchors to secure our raft-up.

The April Cruise will be to the Coronado Cays on April 19-20.  We will eat aboard on Saturday night and at the Coronado Cays Yacht Club on Sunday morning.  If you have not been in the Coronado Cays, it is located at the South East end of the San Diego South Bay, approximately 3 miles from the Coronado bridge.  Sailing in the South Bay is possibly the best in the world because the wind comes over the Silver Strand and leaves the water quite smooth. The entrance to the area is well marked, but you should check your route on a new chart because of the numerous shallow areas.   More details to follow.

For those of us on the raft up – THANKS!  With EIGHT yachts, we had a super turn-out despite the looming dark clouds (it only sprinkled on Saturday evening and doused up before dawn on Sunday morning).

We had a great time….good food (and lots of it) and terrific conversations!!  We even had a musical interlude on Saturday evening provided by the crew of Leave a Message karaoke-style (thank you Johnson’s!!) then a guitar session with the captain of Gypsy Soul and brother to the captain of Leave a Message (thank you Chip and Dwayne!!).  Can’t wait to see the pictures Escape captain took (thanks James for remembering your camera!!) – we’ll be sure to post them on the website (www.sdcatalinaassoc.com) for all to see!!

Thank you to the captain and crew of Sabbatical (that’s Larry and his dog Cabo) for arranging this, being the anchor boat and directing traffic for the best way to raft up!  He’s even an awesome dinghy taxi for those of us who went into Coronado for breakfast on Sunday!!  It was also great to have Mary Ellen take a break and join us for the overnighter!!

So, for those of you who couldn’t make it this time, we will be joining up again next month.  Look for forthcoming emails from Larry to find out the details of our next party on the water!!

Hope to see you at this week’s SDCatA meeting or on the water in the weeks ahead!!

TEAM ESCAPE

Race report April 2008

On Saturday, March 22, SDCaTA/SGYC held the St Patrick’s Day Regatta, our second race of the season. We had a field of eight Catalina’s entered. There were quite a variety of boats with a Cat 25 tall rig, at Cat 25 standard rig, a Cat 27, a Cat 30, two Cat 34’s and two Cat 36 tall rigs. All we had missing were the Cat 36 standard rigs. We had Isle Run come up from Coronado Yacht Club to race but unfortunately he was a DNF. Escape and Isle Run have been having some great races against each other this season, We have competed from South Bay all the way out to the ocean. Dave Flint and his Isle Run team are a tough team to compete against. We had the two Cat 25’s Indiscipline and Classical Cat come all the way from Mission Bay to race. I had the pleasure of meeting  James Baumgart and crew of Indiscipline at the post race party and was glad to hear they had a good time racing with us. We missed having three of our regular racers. Brad was racing in the Cabrillo IV. Dan G was out of town and Bill was working on the RC boat.

As usual we had all kinds of conditions to deal with. We had a strong out going tide, the usual kelp and wind that went from good to nothing. A typical SDCaTA race it seems.

Congratulations to Steve Roeber ( Mis-Behave II) for taking the win. Steve sailed an excellent race in trying conditions. In second place was Kent (Interlude). Third place was James Harvey(Escape). Escape was the first Catalina to finish but the two smaller boats corrected out over us. Fourth was Larry Pascoe ( Sabbatical), fifth was James Baumgart (Indiscipline), sixth was Gary Norgan (Classical Cat), seventh was John Salazar(Coaster) and Dave Flint(Isle Run) was a DNF.

I think I can speak for all the racers in giving our race committee a big thanks for a job well done. Thanks to Simon and Arlene Dekker for donating their time and their boat Sea Trakker.

In other racing news on March 16th and 17th the Catalina 36’s raced in the NOOD’s. We had a field of 6 boats, two tall rigs and four standard rigs. It turned into a pretty exciting weekend of racing with winds in the 24 knot range and swells up to 12 feet off of  Pt. Loma. Race number 3 was probably the most exciting race of the weekend. Shortly after the start Terry Smith (Rippin) and Larry Pascoe (Sabbatical) occupied the same patch of water at the same point in time. This always has a bad ending with Rippin colliding with Sabbatical wiping out the stern pulpit and doing some fiberglass damage. The Inspiration team took advantage of this and led to the windward mark and all the way back to the leeward mark. We were looking for our first win when we lost a crewmember overboard. Luckily Allen who had a bumpy ride along the bottom of the boat was uninjured. So we went from a possible win to a DSQ. After the five races it was Rippin in first, Isle Run second, Cherimarie third, Sabbatical fourth, Inspiration fifth and Aquila sixth. I would like to thank Dan G for having me skipper Inspiration in two of the races and for inviting a couple of my Escape crew. We all had a wonderful time and if we can get the 34’s out next year the Escape team will have some NOOD experience.

Several of the Catalina Association boats have been racing in the SBC down in South Bay. Escape, Isle Run and Cherimarie have been racing in the PHRF Non- Spin class and having some good battles. After four races Escape is in fourth place with 11 pts, Isle Run in fifth place with 12pts and Cherimarie in eighth place with 20 pts.

The results are in for the Cabrillo IV. Brad finished 9th out of 11 boats in PHRF class 4 and Cleve finished 5th out of  7 in PHRF class 5. Cleve missed fourth place by 4 seconds in a 3 ½ hour race.

Next SDCaTA race will be the Coronado Island Race on April 12th. More info will be coming later on how to enter.

See you on the race course,

James Harvey

Technical Discussions

(Reports will remain until new reports come in)

SHARE OUR ‘TECH’ NEEDS. If you need advice on tackling a boat problem, need an extra hand, want to borrow a specific tool, or  need a “how-to” tip on some aspect of your boat’s care, upgrade or maintenance; toss it out to our membership (now 45 members strong) to see if someone else has already tackled that project and can give you some advice. These “tech tips” will also be presented in our monthly newsletters.

Tech Talk

Last year Bill Sedgwick and Larry Pascoe discussed with the club the value of a “volt meter” and described how to use it in trouble shooting typical boat electrical problems.  This is a follow-on to that discussion.

Do Volts Matter?

Larry and Bill avoided telling the club what a precise measurement of voltage means in trouble shooting boat electrical problems.  Actually the precise value is very significant and useful in understanding your boats electrical system.  The digital volt meters that we all have provide sufficient precision to help us to really understand what is happening in our boat electrical systems.

A voltage is the electrical equivalent of pressure in a water pipe.  It really is the “pressure” of the electricity trying to leave a wire.   The exact voltage value is critical in evaluating the charge level of a battery or the proper operation of a charging system.  Unfortunately the meaning of a battery voltage value is time and temperature dependent.

Battery Charge Level Testing

There is no “correct” battery voltage, but the battery voltage reading indicates the relative charge level of a battery.  For this test:

·       Measure battery voltage at the battery terminals

·       There must be no current drain on the battery (best to remove one of the battery terminal connections)

·       No battery charging or discharging for 24 hours.

·       Battery temperature –about 70 deg. F.

·       Water Level – normal

For wet cell batteries

Battery Reading                          Charge Level

12.6                  volts                               100 %

12.4                  volts                               75 %

12.2                  volts                               50 %

12.0                  volts                               25 %

11.8 volts                                         0 %

This charge level is very useful knowledge in understanding the relative charge level of a good battery, it does not indicate that the battery is good; i.e. can provide current for a starter motor for example.  The best way to evaluate the relative goodness of a battery is to discharge it in a controlled test as is done with a “battery load tester”.   An engine mechanic normally has one of these specialized testers.

An obvious way to evaluate a battery is to verify that it will crank and start the engine; it should be able to do so with a 50% charge battery.  Note: if the engine does not crank/start, the problem may be in the wiring connections between the battery and the starter.  A trouble shooting technique is to measure the voltage at the battery during the cranking sequence.  If the voltage goes down below 10-11 volts, the battery is bad if the battery has been charged.   If the voltage does not go down, there is a problem in the wiring or with the starter.

Note: another way to determine the charge level is with a battery hydrometer that checks the acidity level of the battery electrolyte.  They are difficult to use and get repeatable measurements, but they are a simple way to evaluate a battery for charge level.  A difference in cell readings with the battery partial to fully charged indicates a failure of a battery cell.  Obviously this test is only useful on wet cell batteries that are not sealed.

Battery voltage testing can be quite valuable.  Commodore Dan’s boat battery voltage was only 11 volts a few years ago at the Rendezvous and indicated a battery/charging system problem, not a bad starter.

Next Month - Charging System Testing

Speaking of zincs, I recently ordered cone zincs for my MaxProp. The distributor wanted $13.00 each. Here's a source that sells them for $7.65 each: http://boatzincs.com/. They shipped yesterday.
