When you're sailing a boat that has a symmetrical spinnaker, the biggest gains and losses usually occur on the upwind legs. But with asymmetricals, it's exactly the opposite. Gains and losses on the beats are relatively small - but on runs they can be huge!

There are two main reasons for this. First, boats with asymmetrical chutes sail much higher angles downwind, which means they normally split very far apart on runs. With this much separation, even the smallest shifts or puffs can make a big difference.

The second reason is that asymmetrical boats tend to have a much wider range of performance. It's not uncommon for one boat to sail a knot or two faster, or 10° higher or lower, than another boat. This produces large disparities in downwind performance.

Because of the potential for big gains and losses, it is important to sail fast and smart on runs. Here are a bunch of ideas about how to do this. Besides the tips on this spread, there is other good advice tor asymmetricals spread throughout this issue. Here are a couple of the most important points:

• Jibe back through puffs - Symmetrical boats sail low angles that allow them to head in almost the same direction that a puff is going and therefore stay in that puff longer. Because asymmetrical boats sail higher angles, they tend to go across and out of puffs. To stay in better pressure longer, jibe when you get to the Far side of the puff so you can sail back through it.

• Play most shifts as persistent - On runs. Asymmetrical boats sail last with the wind so they clon'l experience as many shifts. In fact, even if the wind direction is oscillating, they might see only one shift during the course of a 10-minute run. Therefore, they should play that as a persistent shift.

Tech Talk

(Important, repeated from last month)

Larry Pascoe had a learning experience during his recent Mission Bay trip. In Catalina his outboard motor ran perfectly, five days later it would not run in Mission Bay due to a fuel system problem.  In checking two outboard motor sources he was told that there is currently is a rash of problems with gasoline contamination in outboards.  The present gasoline/alcohol mix absorbs water and has a very short (weeks) life time until it starts breaking down.  The recommendation is to:  run the gasoline out of your motor before storage and do not keep gasoline more that a month before using.  Buy enough gasoline for your immediate use and dispose of the balance after the outing.  Note: there are some gasoline additives that are effective in increasing the storage life, but do not eliminate the problem.  After fixing his outboard motor, Larry is going to put his unused gasoline into his car.  Gasoline can be disposed of at the marine gas station on Shelter Island.

Race Report for November, 2008

On October 11th SDCaTA and Silver Gate Yacht Club held the Man O’ War Race. We had a beautiful day of racing with a fairly stiff breeze, which is so much more fun than some of the drifting contests we have had in the past. We had six Catalina’s show up, unfortunately none of the “B Fleet” boats showed up. I can’t seem to get rid of those trophies. We had a longer than usual course length at 12.98 miles which was nice considering the conditions. After a little more than two and half  hours Team Escape took the win. ”B Fleet” boats take note, Escape left the racing sail at home and used a 10 year old Dacron cruising sail. So you can be competitive without having expensive racing sails. In second place was Interlude followed by SchatzSea in third, then Sabbatical in fourth. Fifth place was Mis-Behave ll and in sixth was Cherimarie.

Thanks again to Jo Ann, the Dekker’s and the rest of the RC staff for the their time and effort.

SDCaTA has one more race for the 2008 season. Escape has first place wrapped up but there is still a tight race for 2nd through 4th. Indiscipline and Mis Behave ll are tied for 4th. Sabbatical and Interlude are only 3 points apart for 2nd and 3rd. This last race should be really exciting.

I think you have a great idea.  We would be willing to race more often.  I like the idea of racing to a raft up.  The race on Saturday and the party on Sunday provided a fantastic time.  Thanks to everyone.

Technical Discussions

(Reports will remain until new reports come in)

SHARE OUR ‘TECH’ NEEDS. If you need advice on tackling a boat problem, need an extra hand, want to borrow a specific tool, or  need a “how-to” tip on some aspect of your boat’s care, upgrade or maintenance; toss it out to our membership (now 45 members strong) to see if someone else has already tackled that project and can give you some advice. These “tech tips” will also be presented in our monthly newsletters.

I called Catalina Yachts to get a complete spreader replacement kit for my Catalina 30 all wooden spreaders . They sent me to CatalinaDirect.com.  And yes on their home page there was a new item, complete conversion kit part number K1956 ($575). All holes match the old wooden spreaders and tang assembly.   Alas. None in stock, 6 weeks (maybe).

Anyone know who else has  such an item?  Is there a place in Florida doing the same thing?

Neil

PS Chip & Debbie claimed the wooden deck hand holds.

Follow-on:  Updated info on the direct replacement kit for wooden spreaders.  Catalina Direct assembles this kit by buying components from about 5 different sources.  See web page for applicable hull numbers.  Two items of interest: 1)  After cutting off the ends of the ½ inch SS bolt flush when compression tube is stuck inside to bolt, the replacement procedure is to use a long piece of PVC and tie the compression tube to it and fit it up thru the bottom of the mast.  (the tech guy said it’s not that difficult).

2)  The length of the spreader is 39 inches.  The wooden one was 44 inches.

I’m going to wait for the full assembly to arrive.  Cost with tax and shipping is $634.95   Assembly number K-1956.  CatalinaDirect.com   Parts: 1-800-959-7245, tech info: 1-843-1971

We are a fun-loving non-profit sailing group of Catalina owners. Our membership is comprised of over 30 boating families – with Catalinas ranging from 27-42 feet. (All Catalina owners and associates are welcome).

For your convenience, a membership application is on the other side of this page. Annual dues for the San Diego Catalina Assn. are $30 - a fantastic bargain!  Events are announced at our monthly meetings, in our monthly e-mail newsletters and our website: www.SDCatAtalinaassoc.com

We meet the first Wednesday of the every month (except May through September and December) at 7:30 PM at the Silver Gate Yacht Club on Shelter Island.  Meetings include an informative speaker, tech talks and news of upcoming events.  Our events include monthly raft ups, monthly races (April-October) and regularly scheduled social events. Visitors are always welcome!

We sincerely hope you’ll consider membership in our Association and meet other Catalina owners.  Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or if we can help in any way.  We look forward to seeing you soon!
